Chapter 6
Pop Jr.
I pulled up to Momma V’s house a little after twelve. Everyone was there. When I walked in the house, Boo was the first one to say something. “Well, look who decided to show the hell up late. Boy, didn’t I tell your ass I needed you to go to the DMV today to get your driver’s licenses? Still the same late ass Pop, I see.” I was about to apologize to Boo for oversleeping, but Rooster spoke up for me.
“Damn, Boo! Cut my boy some slack. He just got home yesterday. He probably had a fucking hangover from last night. We did get fucked up at his welcome home party,” Rooster said, taking up for me like he used to do when we were kids. I loved the hell out of all of my foster brothers, but Boo, being the oldest, always thought he was our daddy. But don’t get it twisted; he would fuck someone up if they messed with any of us.
“Hey, Boo. Man, I’m sorry. I should have been more responsible. I can head up there now if it’s okay with you,” I told him.
“It’s cool, little bro. I’ll tell my girl you’ll be there first thing Monday morning. They close early on Saturdays, and Rooster, I’m not going to make the meeting today. I have something very important to take care of,” Boo said, walking into the kitchen where Momma V was standing over the stove, cooking a pot of spaghetti.
“I hope my boys are hungry. The spaghetti is almost done!” she yelled, not realizing we were all standing in the kitchen behind her. I walked over to the stove where Momma V was standing.
“Momma, let me help you with that. It smells good,” I told her, grabbing the big spoon out of her hands. She let go of the spoon and patted me on the head, like she used to do when I was a little boy. I used to always try to help her out in the kitchen.
“One of y’all go upstairs and wake little Bubba and Putty Red up, so they can eat. Rooster, did you do your homework? I don’t need that school calling here again. I do the best I can to raise you boys,” Momma V said. We all stood around, looking dumb, because Momma V was talking to us as if we were little kids again. It was like she was reliving when I first came to stay with her.
I sat the spoon down and walked out of the kitchen, pulling Rooster with me. “Man, what the hell is wrong with Momma V?” I asked him.
“All I know is that she forgets things from time to time,” Rooster responded.
“Well, when were you going to tell me about Momma V losing her mind?” I whispered to Rooster. He couldn’t even look at me.
“She is not like that all of the time. Every now and then, she gets confused. She has dementia, bro,” Rooster told me.
I shook my head as a tear fell from my eye.
